Victoria is the capital of the Seychelles located in Mahé. The seat of the Government is also in the capital. The people sent to the island during the French colonisation were police from Mauritius to bring order and law on the island. Their houses were built in Victoria, they called it l’Establissement du Roi. The city got its current name in 1841 from the Queen of England, Victoria at the time. The famous clock tower in the centre of Victoria, it was a present from England in 1903, it was to symbolise the separation away from Mauritius. The clock is a copy of the Vauxhall Bridge Road in London.
